Tri’ing to End ALS 2025
About Us
Husband and wife team Mike Pearson and Donna Bartel, are on a mission, “Tri’ing to End ALS.” They will be competing in a triathlon in each of the ten provinces and 3 territories, racing on weekends and driving over 20,000km over four months.
What is Tri’ing To End ALS?
In 1999, Donna’s mom, Marilyn Walters, was diagnosed with ALS. But that didn’t stop Donna and her sister Tammy from taking action. They ran the Vancouver Marathon as a fundraiser and devised a plan to start a 5k run for ALS while training.
The annual Run, Walk and Roll event occurred from 2001 to 2008; Donna’s mother successfully completed the first one. Sadly, she passed away eight months later. However, Donna continued to raise funds by participating in the Canadian Ironman Triathlon in 2010 and 2012. She called her fundraising campaign “Tri’ing to End ALS.”
Now, Mike and Donna are resurrecting a new “Tri’ing to End ALS” to continue giving hope to those with ALS.
When?
Their journey will start May 2025 in BC, tentatively Nanaimo (race schedule will be confirmed early 2025), then continue across Canada to Alberta and Saskatchewan, before heading north to Yukon and Northwest Territories. Then they’ll travel down to Manitoba, Ontario, Quebec, the Maritimes, Nunuvat, Ontario again, then ending back in BC (possibly Cultus Lake) in September 2025.
Cause?
The ALS Societies across Canada are supporting Mike and Donna in their endeavour. 50% of the funds they raise in each province/territory will go towards that region’s ALS Society’s patient services programs, and the remaining 50% will go to ALS research and clinical trials through PROJECT HOPE at the University of British Columbia.
