Teen’s Compassion Inspires Over $700 Raised in the Fight Against ALS

The ALS Society of BC is incredibly grateful to Simone Donor, a student at Ecole Mission Secondary, for her inspiring efforts to raise funds for the ALS Society of BC. In November 2024, Simone spearheaded an Ice Bucket Challenge fundraiser that raised over $700 for the Society.

Simone’s drive to make a difference was deeply rooted in her personal connection to ALS. Her uncle, Richard Harris, selflessly donated his body to research, and the disease has left an impact on her father’s side of the family. Her father’s sister, Simone’s aunt, passed away from the genetic form of ALS, raising the possibility of ALS within her own family.

Driven to make a difference and honour her family, Simone embarked on a challenging fundraising journey. She contacted her community, engaging teachers, staff, police officers, and even the mayor. Collaborating with Mr. Schneider and Mr. Sward, the administrators of her school’s leadership program, they devised the impactful Ice Bucket Challenge fundraiser.

Simone’s compassion extends beyond ALS. Witnessing the devastating effects of neurodegenerative diseases like ALS and dementia on her family members has fueled her passion for healthcare and inspired her to contribute to finding cures.

“These illnesses are cruel,” says Simone. “They rob people of their individuality. I want to be part of the solution, to help prevent others from experiencing the pain my family has endured.”

The ALS Society of BC is greatly touched by Simone’s dedication and the impact of her Ice Bucket Challenge fundraiser. Her generosity will directly support people with ALS in BC and the Yukon.
