Living with ALS Support Groups

A special meeting of the ALS Society of BC executive committee and Dr. Neil Cashman, Academic Director & Dr. Hannah Briemberg, Director of Medicine ALS Centre at GF Strong was held to develop a plan, in light of the ongoing COVID-19 Virus crisis.

It was an unanimous decision to suspend all ALS BC Living with ALS Support Groups until it is safe to gather again. However, we recognized to support each other during this time is important. At the moment we are offering virtual support groups. Please contact for details.

The ALS Society of BC chooses to err on the side of caution to ensure the safety of all.  Thank you for your understanding.

The groups provide an open, friendly and safe environment for ALS patients, family members, friends and caregivers to discuss issues related to living with ALS.

ALS BC trained volunteers facilitate the groups, and they are a major point of contact between the Society and the ALS community.

We recognize support groups aren’t for everyone, but we also know that not too many people know exactly how fun support groups can be. We laugh and learn so much that it is hard to imagine why some people choose to “go it alone.” Just know we’re here when you need us.

Thank you to the Province of British Columbia for sponsoring the Support Group Program of the ALS Society of BC through a BC Gaming Grant.

Our goal is to have nine support group locations across British Columbia.  Note that due to the pandemic, support group meetings were virtual.

In 2020, the Society organized 85 virtual support group meetings.  To ensure support to ALS clients, the patient services manager increased one on one phone call to clients.  A total of 484 phone calls were logged in 2020.
