John Goyer Memorial Charity Golf Tournament & Silent Auction

The Abbotsford Police Members’ Benevolent Association is holding its annual ALS Charity Golf Tournament & Silent Auction at Chilliwack Golf & Country Club on Monday, July 24, 2023. Our tournament honours the memory of Constable John Goyer who died in the line of duty in 2006. Net proceeds from this event will go to the ALS Society of BC to help fund patient services and research so that perhaps one day they will find a cure for ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, aka: Lou Gehrig’s Disease).

John’s Story: John Goyer joined the Abbotsford Police Department on April 9, 1998 and immediately earned the respect of his colleagues. John was injured in 2001, while he and his partner tried to arrest a man for domestic assault. The suspect resisted violently and after an exhausting struggle he was controlled and handcuffed, but not before John received injuries to his head, neck and back. John did not return to work; in fact, over the next few weeks his condition continued to deteriorate. Less than 3 months later a Neurologist and Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis specialist, diagnosed John with ALS. The same physician also determined that John’s ALS was triggered by the injuries he sustained in the arrest. John died from this illness on April 19, 2006.
