Gillian Calder
Gillian Calder joined the Faculty of Law at the University of Victoria in 2004 from the practice of Aboriginal law with Mandell Pinder, LLP in Vancouver. She served as Associate Dean Academic and Student Relations from 2015-2020 and was promoted to Professor in 2023. She has volunteered her time with several local and national organizations including: WestCoast LEAF, 1Up Single Parents Resource Centre, Broken Rhythms Society, Women’s Legal Education and Action Fund, Lawyers on Stage, Puente Theatre and the ALS Society of BC – Victoria Chapter. Gillian holds a BA (Hons.) UBC; LL.B. UBC; and LL.M. York University. She is a non-practicing member of the Law Society of British Columbia. Current research interests include family law, child welfare law, constitutional law, performativity, law and emotion, queer legal theories and critical legal education. She is a rock climber, a single parent and an avid consumer of popular culture in all its forms. Gillian’s father, David, lived with ALS from August 1999 until his passing in November 2003. Her family remains deeply grateful to the ALS Society of BC for all the support they received as a family during David’s journey with ALS.
