2021 Vernal Equinox: “Dive to the Depths”
..…..into the blackness of the abyss in the winter, resurfacing in the spring……..
At 2:15 am on March 20, 2021, the last day of winter, a group of volunteers will enter the sea, in SCUBA, at the end of the Ogden Point Breakwater in Victoria, BC. They will return to shore at approximately 3:00 am on the first day of spring. The divers will be on the bottom in almost 100 ft of water when winter yields to spring.
The 2500 ft nocturnal sub-surface return trip to shore will offer nonstop opportunities to observe multiple species of invertebrates, fish and molluscs. With some luck and good timing, we may have the honour of an up-close encounter with an Octopus, a nocturnal predator or maybe some Wolf Eels, both of whom reside here. You can view the last encounter with one here! Our Giant Pacific Octopus are the largest species of Octopus in the world. Close encounters with these two magnificent creatures are often the highlight of any local dive. Follow along on Facebook with underwater GoPro footage dispatched post dive.
